Heatwave : 5 tips for your dog

The thermometers will be in a panic over the next few days, with temperatures close to the 43 degrees predicted. Dogs are not great lovers of hot weather, like us they are very sensitive to these crazy temperatures and can quickly feel bad. Here are 5 easy tips to keep your dog cool. We share with you our tips and what we do so that our dogs don't risk heatstroke. Cool jacket, cool mats, dog ice, frozen bones, dog pool... I'll tell you all about it in the article!

1. Cool water to refresh your dog

Your dog's water bowl should always be filled with fresh water. You should change it regularly, but don't replace the warm water with fresh water. Also think about the water cooler, which ensures that your dog always has water at his disposal and that his owners don't have to change it all the time!

2. Walking your dog: Very early or late at night

Do not walk your dog during the day at the hottest hours. Why not?

If it's too hot for you, it's definitely too hot for him. Don't go outside. If you wear shoes to insulate yourself from the ground, he doesn't. He'll have to walk on the hot asphalt and risk very serious burns to his pads.

One good thing to know is that a black or dark coloured dog will attract more heat than another. It's the same phenomenon as when you put on a black shirt; it attracts heat.

Prefer early morning or evening or even night walks. You have never tried a night hike? This is the perfect opportunity to try night hiking with a dog. Thrills and chills guaranteed.

Opt for walks near a water source where your dog can bathe. It's a great way to cool him off a bit. However, be on the lookout for cyanobacteria and hydrocution. Dogs too can suffer from these dangerous or even fatal thermal shocks. If they are very, very hot and suddenly plunge into cool water: beware of the imminent danger of hydrocution. Do as you do, wet him gently to cool him down a little before swimming. Be careful also with the fountains of the cities... it makes you want to but so that water remains clean in the circuits it is treated and NOT DRINKABLE thus especially do not let your dog drink there and if it refreshes there, rinse it at home with clear water to avoid the problems of skin.

3. Never leave a dog alone in a car!

Unfortunately, it cannot be repeated often enough. Every year dogs are victims of their owners' irresponsibility by letting them die of heat in their car.
You only leave your car for a few minutes? It doesn't matter! In hot weather, a dog, like a child for that matter, should never be left alone in a car, even with the windows half open.

The temperature in the interior of a car can very quickly reach 50°C to 60°C and the air becomes unbreathable for any living creature inside.

4. Air to protect his dog from the heat

At home, set up a small corner in a cool, well-ventilated room where he can relax away from the sun and heat. If you have a garden, protect your dog from the heat by preparing a cozy nest in a shady spot.

5. What should I do if my dog gets heatstroke?

If, despite all these precautions, your dog suffers from heat stroke, there is no time to lose.
Rapid breathing or even panting, very high body temperature, vomiting and diarrhoea, muscle tremors, lethargy, unusual movements or loss of consciousness are all signs that should alert you.

Try to reduce its temperature by wetting it with cool (but never icy) water and placing it in a cool place with a fan or any object that can act as a fan.

If you don't see a quick improvement, don't wait to go to the vet.
